At this month's meeting, we will discuss the idea of Rigor vs. Vigor. Rigor is a word that is often thrown around in education. Should it be what we strive for as parents looking for the best educational fit for our child? What would the ideal learning environment to foster a love of learning look like? Take some time to read this short article by Christopher Perrin: https://classicalacademicpress.com/classical-education-rigorous-or-vigorous/. We will discuss this topic together around the fireplace during the conversation hour. #GoGryphons

Eagle Ridge Academy recognizes Veterans Day each year. Part of the Eagle Ridge Academy vision statement is that Eagle Ridge Academy will offer an academically rigorous, time-tested, Classical liberal arts curriculum that fosters an appreciation for the United States of America and her unique role in the world. It is important that Eagle Ridge Academy students understand what it means to be a Veteran and to honor the selfless sacrifice that so many have made for our freedoms.

Grades 2-12 attended Veterans Day assemblies in the ERA Auditorium in honor of the holiday, and kindergarteners passed out flags to Veterans who attended the assembly. We welcomed Mr. Robert Sommers, brother of School Librarian Mrs. Sommers Tillotson as our special guest speaker at this year’s assemblies. Mr. Sommers served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from 1986-1995 and 2002-2014, for a total of 21 years.

Assemblies also included a performance of the Armed Forces Medley and National Anthem performed by the Eagle Ridge Academy Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Ms. Maggie Shirley. The Armed Forces Medley is a patriotic compilation of the official songs for the branches of the U.S. Military, which typically includes the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. School of Rhetoric senior Michael W. announced the branch of service each song represented. Watch the performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP8E75yRNto. Assemblies also included a reading of the Gettysburg Address by School of Logic eighth grader Sarah A. Watch the reading here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpdE5J32vqw.

Thank you to all our performers, speakers, and organizers that helped us celebrate Veterans Day at the Academy today, and to all the Veterans in the Eagle Ridge Academy community and beyond – we thank you for your service.

Our incredible group of student ambassadors will be at the Academy this morning to help with our largest enrollment event of the year - the Fall Enrollment Extravaganza! Students went through a rigorous application process - complete with teacher letters of recommendation and interviews with school staff - and hours of training to become ambassadors. These students embody Eagle Ridge Academy's pillars of Citizenship, Integrity, Perseverance, Honor, Excellence, and Respect, and are passionate about being part of the Gryphon community. If you are a prospective family coming to tour the school today, make sure to talk to one of our ambassadors about their experience at the Academy! #GoGryphons

It was a nice day yesterday for the 17th Annual Eagle Ridge Academy Art Department Pit Fire! 🔥 Each fall, Upper school students enrolled in an art class create a clay piece to be fired in the outdoor pit fire in the school parking lot. This age-old method of firing ceramic wares has become a rare alternative to the modern electric and gas firing techniques used today. Students bury their art pieces in a brick pit, pile wood and other combustibles on top, and light the entire mess on fire. While 20-foot flames make for great entertainment, the actual purpose of this alternative firing method is the intricate surface treatment that can be achieved no other way. 🏺 This beloved Eagle Ridge tradition, started in 2009, is an opportunity for Eagle Ridge students and staff to come together to experience truth, goodness, and beauty. #GoGryphons #ClassicalEducation

We were honored to host a visit from Great Minnesota Schools yesterday to discuss a potential partnership as we expand! Great Minnesota Schools has a strong track record of strategically supporting schools that serve Minneapolis students and we are eager to learn from their expertise as we plan for the future of Eagle Ridge Academy.

Great Minnesota Schools brought more than twenty community and organizational leaders to tour the facility, visit classrooms, ask questions, and learn more about the Academy. Like the potential partnership with Northside Achievement Zone, this potential partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to serve the whole child and strengthen the broader community.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and trust as we continue to pursue our mission of providing an excellent Classical education to more students across Minnesota. Mrs. Mellgren Holm hosted a Gryphon Conversation on Expansion on October 29. To watch a recording of this meeting and see additional updates, please visit the Expansion web page: https://www.eagleridgeacademy.org/page/expansion. #GoGryphons #ClasicalEducation

Last week, Señor Leyva's Spanish students celebrated El Día de los Muertos, a holiday that takes place November 1-2 and acknowledges the symbiotic relationship between life and death. 🌺💀🌹

During el Día de Los Muertos, the spirits of the dead are believed to return home and spend time with their relatives. To welcome them, families build altars in their honor that mostly include yellow marigolds, candles, photos of their deceased loved ones, cut tissue-paper designs, and food and beverages offerings.

Students presented what they learned about the holiday during class. Presentations are still on display in the lunch room and in the School of Rhetoric commons upstairs if you'd like to get a closer look at these intricate student creations! #GoGryphons

From our youngest kindergarteners to our high school seniors, every student deserves the chance to stay active and have fun during recess and lunch. Over time, balls deflate, jump ropes break, and board games lose pieces—so replenishing this equipment is essential to keeping playtime safe, active, and enjoyable for everyone. During Give to the Max this November, you can help keep classroom resources in place by providing the equipment our students need to stay active and have fun!

Give to the Max is a statewide outpouring of support for thousands of nonprofits and schools across Minnesota. The Giving Holiday is scheduled for Thursday, November 20, but you don’t have to wait to support Eagle Ridge Academy, as Early Giving began TODAY, November 1! Early gifts will be counted toward Give to the Max prize incentives and giving day totals. Together, we hope to raise more than $1,500 for new recess equipment during Give to the Max. Join the entire community by pledging your support this November. Learn more and schedule a donation for Give to the Max Day here: https://www.givemn.org/story/003buf.
