| | ERA was the first public charter school in the southwest suburban area specifically dedicated to offering a demanding college-preparatory, classical, liberal-arts curriculum. We opened in September 2004 with 108 students in grades 6, 7, and 9, expanding by one grade per year, so that we now serve some 280 students in grades 6-12 and graduated the first class of seniors in June, 2008. In September of 2008, representatives from ERA met with our authorizer, Friends of Education, and discussed expansion down to K-5. The ERA board subsequently conducted a formal poll of ERA parents, faculty, and community members to assess possible interest in such an expansion. The poll confirmed solid support for the idea. The board then met for a Saturday retreat to discuss governance, past success, and future plans, and on March 10, 2009, voted unanimously to pursue ERA’s expansion to add grades K-5 by September 2010, pending a feasibility study, support from our authorizer, and MDE approval of this expansion request.
